A word from The Creator
Welcome to to my site! You can simply refer to me as "The Creator", since I created The Toasted Odyssey, and that's all that really matters. I added this section as something of a miscellaneous area while I work on getting things up and running, so apologies if things don't look as well as they should.
OOH I KNOW! What about an FAQ segment. I'm gonna use the section below to address some things that people tend to ask me whenever I talk to them about TTO.
FAQ
Where did you get the idea for The Toasted Odyssey?
This goes way back to the far-off year of...2018 (yeah, I know we all feel old now) when I was still in high school. At the time I was absolutely crushing it in a graphic design elective I was taking. One day, I was bored and made a small doodle of a piece of toast in a browser-based pixel art site. I still have it right here:
Not really much to look at, is it? At the time I thought it was really good for something that I scribbled out in the spur of the moment. After that, I thought to myself 'If I can make something this good on a whim, imagine what I could make if I actually tried to make something for real...' At the time, I had already expressed interest in game development for years, but I never really came up with any ideas for a "main project" until then. After that moment, I started brainstorming a bunch of different things. How can a piece of toast be alive? What kind of world would this be a normality in? What struggles could this piece of toast go through that really gets a player engaged? It was thoughts like these that ultimately snowballed into the Consumera that we have today. I have some crazy things planned out. I hope you all will come to enjoy them when the time comes.
Why did you decide to create this website?
Essentially, I wanted all the information on The Toasted Odyssey to be in one place instead of splitting it across multiple different sources that not everyone will automatically have access to, like social media. Since TTO is a long-term project, it'd be pretty beneficial to make something like this. Now you can come here whenever you want updates regarding TTO and you don't even need to sign up for any pesky social media sites to do it!
Does this site include spoilers?
I'm sure you'll be either pleased or horrified to discover that everything currently on this site is a only small percentage of The Toasted Odyssey's lore. On this site, you'll only find info that is mentioned in the demos and the comic. Nothing from the main story will be spoiled here.
When is the release date?
When it's ready. I think I've learned the hard way not to put a date on something when there's no guarantee that nothing will go wrong before then. I'm sure some of you have seen the somewhat infamous Boot Camp Demo trailer from 2019 by now (and if you hadn't, you probably just did and cringed.) I've left that video up as something of a humiliation ritual for myself and believe with certainty that one day we'll be able to look at that and laugh about it. But for now, it's a lesson learned for me. I won't make a new trailer or confirm a release date until I can say for certain that it's in a playable enough state to really be true. In the meantime, I can only selfishly request your patience.
What programs do you use to draw with
I use a program called Aseprite! It's made specifially for pixel art. I prefer to draw my sprites on a 64x64 canvas since 64-bit just seems like the sweet spot for the game.
How do you make your comics?
When it comes to making the comics, I try to make sure the image is optimized specifically to fit on Webtoon since Webtoon Canvas is where you can read it going forward. My specific process involves drawing on a canvas of any vertical length. It can be as long as you want, but it's highly recommended to keep the width at a fixed 200 pixel size. I draw everything out there before upscaling (for the non-pixel art enthusiasts, pixel art is actually very small, so it's pretty standard to upscale the size of anything you're making outside of sprites for it to look normal). Once the image is upscaled by 400%, I add the text to the panels (I've found that upscaling with the text included causes the text to become warped, so I've gotten more comfortable with adding the text in post.) and upload them to webtoon.
Do you have any other games out right now?
Yes and no. I've made a few games in the past like text based games, short point-and-click games, the obligatory Asteriods clone that most people usually make when they're just starting out, stuff like that. None of these games are actually publicly playable, sadly. Outside of a few scrapped game jam games, The Toasted Odyssey is my first major leap into a full-blown game. I hate to throw out a simple "trust me bro" on this, but if there's anything that I've learned over the last decade, it's my own capabilities. If I'm gonna pull this off, I'll need to start within my limitations and work up from there as I learn more. This is the reason for The Toasted Odyssey's release schedule being the way that it is.
In the Games page, you mention The Toasted Odyssey having an episodic release schedule. How many chapters will there be?
Not counting the Boot Camp Demos (of which there are 2), I think 7 chapters is good enough to tell the full story. I can promise you all this: If TTO becomes a major success, while I won't be against stuff like spinoffs and sidestories, I will not drag the main story out or change it for profit or attention or anything like that. I've felt that way since I first came up with TTO and like the story itself, and it has remained unchanged since its inception.
Are you using AI for The Toasted Odyssey?
No generative AI has been or ever will be used in any of my projects. Only all natural, free range, grass-fed pixels.
